FysKam

FysKam is the student association primarily aimed at those who study physics at Uppsala University but non physicists are also welcome to become members and participate in our events. FysKam's roots can be tracked back to 1982 when it was founded by Mats Göthe and David Nordfors. FysKam was shut down at some point around 1991 in correlation with the physicist programme being shut down and replaced with the scientist programme. FysKam was reinstated some unknown year there after but exactly when is not known since the earliest protocols in our possesion date back to 1999 and don't reference anything about it. In the beginning we were seated at Fysikum, these days known as old Fysikum, in Engelska Parken, but during the 1990s up to 2003 the science institutions moved to BMC, Polacksbacken and Ångströmlaboratoriet. It was only logical that FysKam would do the same and was, at the latest, 2001 fully established at Ångströmlaboratoriet.

Skamvrån

Skamvrån is the locale where we hang out. You can find it in house 18, the middle of the red officiers houses by Ångströmslaboratoriet. Here you can sit and study, there's often other students here that you might be able to ask for help if needed. You can buy something to drink, frozen food and snacks from the kiosk or why not drink a cup of coffee, we have Coffee Communism in Skamvrån. Free coffee with voluntary donations! This means that you can drink as much coffee as you want and then you pay back after your own ability. And since we don't discriminate of course tea is also included in the Coffee Communism. Requests regarding the selection in the kiosk? There's a list where you can write requests, no guarantee that we can buy everything on the list. We also sell merch in the form of patches, cloth bags and Coffee Communism cups.

Tour

Många Teds får plats här

In the Skamvrå to the left you will find our kiosk! Here you can buy drinks from the fridge, food from the freezer and tons of snacks! Here you can also buy some of the sections merch. If you think something is missing from the kiosk you can write suggestions and recommendations in the Skamvrås whiteboard and we will see what we can do. On the fridge there is usually posters with information regarding some activities that the section is doing currently and the monthly schedule.

Många Teds får plats här

To the right of the fridge you will find two magical boxes that in some magical way transforms cold food into heated food (the inverse is not possible tho sadly :( ). Here we also have the pride and joy of Skamvrån - COFFEE! There is also tea in the teadrawer. Below the teadrawer there is various tools that you can use from the tooldrawer, just make sure to place them back once you are done. There is also a guitarr hanging that you can entertain other inhabitants in the Skamvrå with if you feel like it.

Många Teds får plats här

This table is the perfect spot to sit at if you want to focus and lock in a little bit. It's also an amazing spot to eat your heated lunch at. On the right side of the blackboard there is also some important informations that should not be erased (except updating todays word etc) but the rest of the blackboard is free to use whenever you want! At this table there is usually a lot of intelligent people sitting so if you have any questions you can also feel free to ask them here!

Många Teds får plats här

Here is a comfortable study space with couches (and blankets), perfect for more relaxed studytime. Feel free to use the speakers but do consider the others that are studying. Same goes for the guitar, feel free to play but do consider the others that are studying. It's also perfectly fine to open the window during the time of the year when it's weather for it, but make sure to close it before leaving otherwise you'll unleash Locale and Study Social Manager's wrath.

Många Teds får plats här

In this corner you can find the amongst other things a TV and speakers. Feel free to use these for a cozy movie night or other things, just make sure not to bother people studying too much. In this bookshelf you can also find the sections archive where for example minutes from meetings (that are also posted in the footer of this website), economy documents and various other documents! These are public records so you are most welcome to read these documents!

Många Teds får plats här

In this bookshelf you'll find course books for a miture of courses that you are free to use while in Skamvrån. If you want to borrow a book outside Skamvrån you'll first of all have to write yourself on the cleaning list (on the door) and MOST IMPORTANTLY ask Locale and Study Social Manager. Feel free to donate books you dont need anymore if you feel like it! It's most appreciated! :)

Skamvrån wasn't always located in house 18. Until 2022 Skamvrån was located in Å81411 on the first floor in house 8 of Ångströmslaboratoriet. These days it's less known that before that it was located in Å80406, since it was moved in 2012. Exactly how long it was located there isn't certain more than at the latest from 2006. In 2001 Skamvrån had according to a meeting minute just moved into Å81405, this minute was however written by hand and no other documents in our possesion point to this locale. Skamvrån existed already back at old Fysikum, it was located close to the entrance and there was a couch, table hockey (broke in 2002 :() and the ability to purchase snacks. Not a lot has changed in other words.

Section clothing

Föreställ dig en blå labbrock

Like many other sections we have our own section clothing. It comes in the shape of a blue labcoat with FysKam's logo on the back. Interested in getting your own? Obviously! So how do you get one? We order them based on demand, and is normally done during early autumn in conjunction with new students arriving, so keep an eye out for an order form during that time.

Did you know that FysKam didn't always have labcoats as section clothing? FysKam's first official section clothing was available already in the 80s, it was a white overall with the then logo on the back. In 1988 they swapped to a blue overall with the same logo instead, FysKam's first patch was also made this year. In 2011 it was decided to create the so called Skamkappan (shame coat), a large coat made from sturdy fabric that is inspired by the clothing worn by the Jedi in Star Wars (there's a rumor that a few still exist stored away securely). Skamkappan came to be due to overalls and labcoats wasn't seen as representing the physics education correctly. One of the suggestions was a blue blazer as it was a much better representation of a physicists everyday life. The suggestion was outvoted due to highlighting a masculine image of the physics education, while physicists work to get rid of the assumption that physics is male dominated. Other problems was size (surface to attach patches) and prize. Because of this a form of full body coverage clothing was suggested instead to better match the overall, labcoat and morning robe which ended up landing in the form of a coat with a hood and sleeves. These where however a lot pricier than other section clothing due to being custom made, the process for this was also a hassle. In 2014 it was decided, by membership vote, that a blue labcoat should be FysKam's section clothing.

Old FysKam

Due to, amongst other things, that the section was shut down for some time, pieces of our history has become lost throughout the years. With the help of members from early FysKam and by digging through old documents and our old websites (at least three have existed before this one) we've managed to gather some already forgotten things and some that was risking being forgotten.

FysKam has celebrated it's 30th anniversary twice. First in 2010, but later it was discovered it was the wrong year since the section was founded in 1982, the solution was to celebrate again in 2012.

in the 80s FysKam had it's own newspaper that naturally was named FysKams Tidning (FysKam's Newspaper). A couple scanned pages can be found here (only in swedish unfortunatley).

During a short period of time FysKam had a game association named FUSK (Fyskams Utilitaristiska SpelKompani) (the abbreviation is swedish for cheating). It was founded in the autumn of 2014 and had a few events during spring 2015. According to the associations statutes the association can only be dissolved att FUSK's yearly meeting if it is explicitly mentioned in the summons and less than five members are opposed. There's no documentation so it's unknown if the association ever was formally dissolved.

Before the MILF was conceptualized FysKam was working on it's own songbook. Some songs that were likely to be included can be found here and here!

Full Teknist (Drunk Technologist). Written for and performed during a spex at Kongressen 1988. A fancier sittning that in some way was connected to the election of FysKam's board.

Another song, Jag Var På Nation Igår (I Was At a Nation Yesterday), that together with Full Teknist can inofficially be attributed to the project "Grön SAAB -69".

Performance of the song Full Teknist at FysKam's first 30th anniversary.

In 2005 it was decided that FysKam should have a simple website, suspected to be this one.

For the interested, there's a blog about the Bachelor's Programme in Physics from 2011-2015 (in swedish).
There's also a blog about the Master's Programme in Physics written by a few different international students from 2011-2016 (in english! :D).
